The presentation ceremony for the 64th Mainichi Film Awards has been scheduled for February 8. The winners were already announced on Tuesday, revealing that the Grand Prize is being given to Setsuro Wakamatsu’s “Shizumanu Taiyo.” The movie, starring Ken Watanabe (50), is based on the struggles of a real-life JAL employee in the aftermath of the Flight 123 disaster. The best actor award went to Kenichi Matsuyama (24) for his role in “Ultra Miracle Love Story.” He performed as a unique young man who acts on his emotions. “I’m glad to receive the award because I enjoyed acting in the film,” Matsuyama remarked.

I can now confirm that the Kaiji DVD release date has been set for April 9th. You can pre-order your copy at the Japanese Amazon. As always there will be a long wait for the movie to be released with English subtitles but should be available to order without subtitles from international websites such as YesAsia.com very soon.

1. Interviewer – Please, tell me why you decided to work on this film?
Ken’ichi – Well, I’ve never had the chance to work with a foreign director, so I thought it would be very interesting. Hans Canosa also directed Conversations With Other Woman (2005 film) and used never before seen techniques. I want to be significant and able to do things in a new way. We’re also interested in whether how this is directed will work and I wanted to be helpful and adjust.
